A holographic display that can project 3D-looking images inside a glass box is now available for purchase. Known as the Looking Glass, this product can create life-like objects within its compact design that fits perfectly on a desk. The New York-based startup showcased how the device generates the illusion of 3D objects by projecting 45 simultaneous views of the image, each from a different angle, providing a seamless visual experience for users.
Shawn Frayne, CEO of Looking Glass Factory, expressed excitement about the technology, highlighting its ability to project images at up to 60 frames per second. Despite its innovative features, the holographic display has its limitations, as the 3D images can only be viewed from the front of the device. To interact with the displayed images, users can employ motion-detecting sensors or game controllers, enabling virtual manipulation without physical contact.
While the Looking Glass targets designers and illustrators in industries such as gaming, movies, and architecture, it currently lacks a vast content library. The startup aims to expand its market presence by offering a platform for users to visualize their projects in 3D without the need for virtual reality headsets. Future plans involve introducing the holographic display for retail and educational purposes.
Priced at $600, the Looking Glass is available for pre-order at a discounted rate of $399 for a limited time. The product comes in two sizes, with the larger display costing up to $3,000. Initial shipments are set to begin in September, with subsequent units scheduled for delivery in December, providing users with an immersive 3D experience right at their fingertips.
